The “Apple” project initiative started with the goal of promoting women’s rights in Kosovo. Following a detailed and chronological academic study on the symbolism of apple terminology and its meaning in different periods of time and fields such as: art, mythology, religion beliefs, science and technology, the apple symbol was analysed in parallel with the symbol of women.
As a result, it is possible to clearly see the common usage of apple in different cultures and to figure outsome obscure issues about how it represents women. Women portrayed with an apple represents disobedience and rebellion to God or allurement, lust, temptation, sin, immorality, and is always carrying a negative message to public.
Through 12 photographic collection, we aim to shatter these negative perceptions. Instead, we want to give this symbol a new meaning by portraying women holding an apple as empowering, confident, strong, and beautiful.
Project “Molla” is an initiative started by the independent art collective, Malda Susuri (artist) and Rudina Voca (curator), with the support of the 4th President of Republic of Kosovo (2011-2016) Atifete Jahjaga.
